Mycobacterium abscessus is a rapidly growing mycobacterium. Mycobacterium abscessus causes lung disease, post-traumatic wound infections mostly in patients with less immune system. It is a rapid growing mycobacterium. It grows at 28°C and 37 °C after 7 days. It grows on MacConkey agar. It has tolerance to saline media (5% NaCl).

These are aerobic and non-motile bacteria which are acid fast. Symptoms includes skin infection usually red, warm, tender to the touch, swollen and painful, fever, chills, muscle aches.
