Dry mouth(Xerostomia) means you don't have enough saliva, or spit, to keep your mouth moist. Everyone has a dry mouth once in a while, especially if you're nervous, upset or under stress. Xerostomia is a common oral concern for many patients.
It is estimated that up to 10 percent of the general population experiences persistent oral dryness.
Treatment includes sipping water or other sugar-free juices frequently, Stimulate the flow of your saliva by eating foods, chewing sugarless gum, acid-tasting, sugarless (diabetic-type) candies. At least 400 kinds of medications have been reported to cause dry mouth.
Salivary flow is particularly reduced when two or more hyposalivatory drugs are taken simultaneously. Hyposalivation may be diagnosed with the aid of salivary collection tests (called sialometry), while other tests as scintigraphy or sialography.
