Asthma is a chronic lung disease which narrows and inflames the airways. It can occur in individuals irrespective of their age, even in infants; most children with the illness developed it by about age five and more common in boys than in girls in early childhood and the tendency to develop it often runs in families. It causes breathing problems, with symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. In age group 0-4 years very small numbers of deaths from asthma occurred, a total of 33 actual deaths over the 20-year study period, which was similar to the number of deaths registered under COPD. From age 5, asthma mortality showed a lower level in the 1990s than in the 1980s
