    Gilbert's syndrome is a common harmless mild disorder in which the liver is unable to properly process the yellowish-brown pigment called bilirubin. Gilbert's syndrome typically does not need treatment, but may affect the toxicity of certain medication. The medical name for this is ‘unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia’.

    In GS the mutation causes ‘reduced gene expression’, meaning that it limits production of thespecific UGT enzyme (called UGT1A1) responsible for conjugating bilirubin . Symptoms Tiredness, Mild weakness, Mild tummy (abdominal) pains and mild feeling of sickness (nausea).
