Milk Allergy Pathophysiology:
Milk is one of the most common food allergens. Individuals with a hypersensitivity to cow's milk might likewise be adversely affected by milk from different creatures, including sheep and goats. Allergy to cow’s milk is the most common food allergy in infants and young children. Nearly all infants who develop an allergy to milk do so in their first year of life. Most children eventually outgrow a milk allergy.
Milk Allergy Symptoms:
Within a short period of time after consuming milk or a milk protein, you may experience the following symptoms: Hives, Stomach upset, Vomiting, Bloody stools, especially in infants Anaphylaxis: a rare, potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can send the body into shock.Often, children with a milk allergy will have a "slow" reaction, which means symptoms will develop over time—perhaps within several hours to days later.
Milk Allergy Management and Treatment:
To prevent a reaction, strict avoidance of cow’s milk and cow’s milk products is vital. Always read ingredient labels to identify cow’s milk ingredients. It is recommended that formula-fed infants who are allergic to milk use an extensively hydrolyzed, casein-based formula. This type of formula contains protein that has been extensively broken down so it is different than milk protein and not as likely to cause an allergic reaction.
