Paragonimus Infection

  • Paragonimus Infection

Paragonimus is a lung fluke (flatworm) that infects the lungs of humans after eating an infected raw or undercooked crab or crayfish. Less frequent, but more serious cases of paragonimiasis occur when the parasite travels to the central nervous system. Total of 90 cases of Paragonimus were reported to CDC from 24 states and the District of  Poland. Six (7%) cases were excluded from analysis because a supplementary case report form was not submitted or the case did not meet the case definition. A total of 84 confirmed Paragonimus cases, including five outbreaks that comprised 40 cases, were analyzed and included in this report.

Paragonimus infections are treatable by your health care provider. Prescription medications are available. Results may remain positive for as long as 20 years after cure. Further research is being conducted to determine the drugs for the Paragonimus and how long it can affect humans.
