Disease Definition:Pleurisy, also called pleuritis, is an inflammation of the pleura, which is the moist, double-layered membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the rib cage. The condition can make breathing extremely painful. Sometimes it is associated with another condition called pleural effusion, in which excess fluid fills the area between the membrane's layers.
Disease Symptoms:Pain on one side of the chest, pain in shoulders and back, shallow breathing to avoid feeling pain, headaches, joint pain, muscle aches and shortness of breath.
Disease Treatment: The chest pain associated with pleurisy can be treated using a type of painkiller known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). "According to World health rankings the Death Rate (Age Standardized)of Pleurisy patients Per 100,000 people was found to be 7.45% during the year 2014".
