Fat necrosis or degeneration can result from a variety of factors such as diseases, infection, and trauma. Especially in newborns and infants, repeated low-grade frictional trauma leads to fat necrosis or degeneration, because they have delicate skins. A three-month-old baby was presented with multiple erythematous patches on her both arms. The biopsy specimen showed mild fat degeneration and infiltration of macrophages with some eosinophils in the subcutaneous tissue. The patient was diagnosed as traumatic fat degeneration with contact dermatitis. In Korea, some parents tend to put their babies’ arms within their pants, instead of using swaddle blankets, to keep them from being disturbed by their own startle reflex. The elastic waistbands of the pants appear to have repeatedly irritated her skin. Herein, we report the case of traumatic fat degeneration with contact dermatitis due to the repeated irritation by elastic waistbands.
