Abstract :

Introduction: Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a group of islands situated in Bay of Bengal. Inhabitants of these islands are a mixture of different races and cultures who migrated from various places of India and also the original tribal population. ANIIMS, Port Blair is the only tertiary care center in the whole island and caters to the whole population. Aim & Objective: To describe the cases diagnosed and treated for malignancy at ANIIMS from January 2015 to January 2016. Methodology: A one year cross sectional study carried out by the Division of Medical Oncology using the clinical records. Results: A total of 275 patients were diagnosed with malignancies. 138 of them were males and 137 were female. Maximum number of patients belonged to South Andaman province (193). Fifteen (15) of the patients were of tribal origins who are the actual natives of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Cancer was most common in the age group of 41 to 60 years (132). Malignancies of head and neck were found in high numbers compared to others (75). Other common malignancies encountered were gastrointestinal (46), breast (45), gynecological (35), blood related (34) and lung (20). Buccal mucosa (25) was the predominant site in head and neck cancers and stomach (11) was the most common site in gastrointestinal malignancies. 177 cases were in advanced stage of cancers at the time of diagnosis and 64 were in localized stage. 183 patients survived after treatment, 45 patients expired and rest 25 had lost follow up at the time of analysis. Conclusion: Head and neck cancers are more prevalent in population of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the reasons for this should be explored for better control of malignancies in the island.

P P Abdul Shahid has completed his MBBS from Calicut University, Kerala, MD (Internal Medicine) from Aligarh Muslim University and DM (Medical Oncology) from Regional Cancer Centre Trivandrum. He is the Consultant Medical Oncologist at Andaman and Nicobar Island Institute of Medical Science. He has published papers in reputed journals.
