Adverse Drug Reaction related hospitalization in a tertiary care hospital in South India: A study based on WHO ICD classification

Abstract:

Over the past few decades, advancements in the drug therapy resulted in enhanced patient care. Parallely, a significant increase in the incidence of drug related problems (DRPs) has occurred. The study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital with the objectives to classify ADR-related DRP cases according to WHO ICD coding. A cross sectional retrospective study from Jan 2009 to Dec 2011 for a period of 3 years was done. All inpatients admitted due to DRPs to general and speciality units including emergency departments were included in the study. Patients were identified based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and related Health Problems (ICD) of the World Health Organization for DRPs from the Medical Record Department of the hospital. Based on study criteria, 378 DRP cases were considered for the study. Base line data of the Drug related hospitalized patients involving the mean age, age category, sex, mean duration of hospitalization, and admission into casuality/general ward were assessed. CNS drugs and antimicrobials were the major drug categories contributing to DRPs with incidences of 52.6% and 13.5% respectively. Itching and rash was the most frequently found ADR (20.1%). Benzodiazepines were found to cause highest number of ADR-related admissions with an incidence of 24.2%. All the cases were classified according to WHO/ICD coding for ADRS and evaluated for severity of DRP. The therapeutic plan followed to manage the DRPs was also studied.

Ch Manasa is currently a student pursuing Doctor of Pharmacy Program in Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal University, Karnataka. She has presented poster on ?Pharmacovigilance Programme of India? in Pharmaquora, at Manipal college of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She also presented a poster at NIPER Hyderabad for the International Conference on Drugs for the Future: Infectious Diseases (DFID). Also attended various national and international conferences.
