Assessment of risk factors for chronic kidney disease

Abstract:

The prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasing globally due to the increased incidence of risk factors. The objective of this study is to assess the risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease in patients admitted in nephrology department of tertiary care hospital. The prospective observational study was conducted for a period of one year in inpatient nephrology department, tertiary care hospital in south India. The patients of either gender with the age group more than 18 years who were diagnosed as CKD were included in the study. The demographic details and risk factors was collected and assessed. Total of 312 CKD patients were included in the study. Out of 312, the maximum number of patients was in the age group of 46 to 60 years (n=113, 36.22%) and male predominance (n=242, 77.56%). The majority of the patients had hypertension (n=298, 95.51%) and diabetes (n=160, 51.3%) as risk factors, followed by advanced age (n=98, 31.4%), smoking (n=37, 11.9%), urinary tract infection (n=23, 7.4%), Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs use (n=20, 6.4%) and other risk factors. Out of 312 patients, 95.19% were developed minimum of one risk factor (n=82, 26.3%) and maximum of 5 risk factors (n=5, 1.16%). Early identification of patients who are at risk and strategies to decrease the rate of progression of CKD helps to reduce the prevalence and mortality.
