Electricity and any solid, liquid or gaseous fuel that is produced through the processing of biomass provide an alternative to the expansion of fossil fuels consumption. With careful strategies and under appropriate regulatory frameworks, bioenergy, and biofuels, may be instrumental to slowing down the process of global warming and enhancing energy security, as well as possibly providing opportunities for countries to diversify agriculture production and raise rural incomes. The foundation of a bio-based industry depends on an abundant supply of biomass. Traditional biomass provides important sources of energy; in most develop - ing countries wood fuels still constitute the largest single source of energy, mainly for cooking and heating. Biofuels are extracted through conversion technologies from wood, crops and waste material. There are many different kinds of biofuels and their usage and performance in economic, environmental and social terms varies significantly depending upon technology, location & farm - ing practices. Food & bioenergy crops are now competing for land, this problem can be potentially avoided by using abandoned agriculture lands for bioenergy agriculture. Also, agriculture crop wastes and residues, wood waste & residues, aquatic plants, animal wastes, municipal waste and other waste materials can be used to produce bioenergy/ biofuels. Integrated food energy systems designed to integrate, intensify and increase the simultaneous production of food & energy by combining the production of food & fuel feedstock on the same land, through mixed cropping or by transforming the byproducts of one system into the feedstocks for the other. Bioenergy offers many new opportunities, if managed carefully.
Santosh Chopde has completed M.Tech (Dairy Engineering) from NDRI, Karnal (INDIA) and presently he is working as an assistant professor at College of Dairy Technology, Udgir.
