Contact lenses fitting after intracorneal ring in keratoconus

Abstract :

Purpose: Evaluate contact lenses fitting after intracorneal ring implantation for keratoconus, its visual acuity and confort. Setting: Hospital de Olhos do Paran�, Curitiba, Brazil. Methods: Retrospective study of patients undergoing contact lenses fitting after intracorneal ring for keratoconus. The citerion for contact lens fitting was visual acuity worse than the patient desire after corneal ring. Contact lenses were tested even though all patients had intracorneal ring done because wearing contact lenses were impossible. The visual acuity analysis was done by a correlation between Snellen and LogMAR scales. The comfort was evaluated according subjective questioning of good, medium or poor comfort. Results : 19 patients were included in the study. Only two patients (10.5 %) did not achieved good comfort with contact lenses and penetrating keratoplasty was done. All the others 17 patients showed good or medium comfort. Four rigid gas permeable contact lenses were fitted, onepiggyback system, 3 toric soft contact lenses, 2 soft lenses specially design for keratoconus and 7 disposable soft lenses. The average visual acuity improved from 0.7+ 0.3 to 0.2 + 0.1 Log MAR units after contact lenses fitting. Conclusion: Contact lens fitting after intracorneal ring, especially soft contact lenses, is possible, gives good comfort and improves visual acuity. This allows more patients to postpone the penetrating keratoplasty with good vision and comfort.

Luciane B Moreira has completed her Ph.D. from Universidade Federal de S�o Paulo, Brasil in 2007 and her speciality in cornea and refractive surgery at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Souther California. She is the coordinator of Contact Lenses service at Hospital de Olhos do Paran� and Universidade Federal do Paran�, Brasil. She has published more than 10 papers in reputed journals and serving as an Editorial Board Member of Arquivos Brasilieiros de Oftalmologia.
