Abstract:

Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) are important problems in any health care settings most often caused the care or intervention of the health care provider. Health care systems across the world are attempting to identify these events so as to prevent recurrence of such events. The indicator tool methodology pioneered by Classen et al provides an alternative approach to handle this problem. The present study was aimed to study adverse drug events using Medical care module of Indicator list in a Surgery department. The medical care module had a total of 51 items. This module focused on identifying the ADEs based on the specific use of drugs or their antidotes. A total of 150 patient records were reviewed and 221 indicators were identified in these case records. 80 indicators were found to be true positive with appropriate identification of ADEs. In this module 31 out of 51 items were effective in picking up ADEs. Use of repeated lab assessment, laxative and pyrexia were commonindicators. Most important ADEs werelab value abnormality (%), constipation (%), and pyrexia (%). Higher the number of indicators in a case record means higher chance for identifying of ADEs. The medical care module identified significant number of ADEs in the reviewed case records. This approach could be used along with the existing methods to identify the adverse events in a surgical setting.

Thanmai Vangaveeti is doing Doctor of Pharmacy in Manipal University. Apart from Academic curriculum we are trained to do ward duties in 2400 bedded hospital which is attached to our college. We are providing clinical activities like patient counseling, Adverse Drug Reaction monitoring and reporting, providing drug information, medication history interview etc.
