Development of a reliable and valid Taiwan version of the brief COPE: Using nurses for test subjects

Abstract :

To translate a multidimensional measure of coping strategies: the Brief COPE, into Chinese and establish its psychometric properties among Taiwan people. A two-stage study design determined the cultural equivalency and content validity of the translated scale and established the psychometric properties of the Taiwan Brief COPE (TBC). Two samples were recruited to test the psychometric propertiesof TBC. A convenience sample of 509 female ICU nurses from 18 hospitals in Taiwan to test the validity and reliability of the TBC in a dispositional format. Factor analysis supported the validity of the TBC. Eight factors extracted from 28 items can explain 63.878% of variance. The Cronbach�s a of the 14 subscales ranged from 0.428 to 0.832 and the split-half reliability of the 14 subscales ranged from 0.428 to 0.833 (p< .001).Another convenience sample of 333 female nurses in Taiwan to test the validity and reliability of the TBC in a situational format. Factor analysis also supported the validity of the TBC. Seven factors extracted from 28 items can explain 64.039% of variance. The Cronbach�s a of the 14 subscales ranged from 0.462 to 0.787 and the split-half reliability of the 14 subscales ranged from 0.463 to 0.787 (p< .001). Results in both samples indicate good psychometric properties for the TBC, whatever the format (i.e. dispositional or situational).

Biography :

Huey-Shyan Lin is an Associate Professor and the Director of department of Health-Business Administration, school of nursing at Fooyin University in Taiwan. She received the PhD in health services policy and management from University of South Carolina, USA. She now serves a consultant of Research and Development, Department of Health, Kaohsiung City Government, and research consultants of several hospitals, Taiwan, R.O.C. She also possesses a good publication record in nurse depression, stress management, health promotion, instrument development, and clinical medicine. Her biography was included in Who’s Who in the World 2014 & 2015.
