Abstract
The Libyan heath system faces big challenges in this very difficult time with lack of resources and thousands of illegal migrants mainly from Africa coming to cross to EU. Before they make it to the ships, they stay in Libya for period of time, which could be months and may stay and work in Libya. Bani Walid is a small city with 120000 people, receives thousands of migrants every month. Majority of them are from countries known with endemic infections. Therefore this study was carried during Jan to May 2016 with the help of private laboratories in Bani Walid and non-governmental foreigners’ registration committee in Bani Walid. 4325 non- Libyans from 24 nationalities were examined for different infections including HBV, HCV, HIV and intestinal parasites to find out the prevalence and set plans for containing threat to local population. 5 ml of blood samples were tested for viral infections using Rapid test kit. Positive results were confirmed by ELISA in Bani Walid General Hospital. Urine and stool samples were examined for parasites by microscopy techniques and some patients were investigated further using X-ray and CT-scan. The findings were 22.12%, 17.8% and 9.52% positive for HBV, HCV and HIV respectively. Parasites infections results were; Ascariasis 4%, Schistosomasis 6.2% and Leishmaniasis 1.3%. Infection rate for each nationality was established to figure out the threat. The study results show high threat for Libyans to become infected. Libyan heath providers have to think differently and focus on educating local population about transmission, symptoms and control of infections as the first line of defense for Libya with lack of resources. Results and recommendations were submitted to local heath authority.
