Abstract :

Agitation and aggressive are two of the most common negative behaviors exhibited by people with dementia. Psychotropic medications are often used as a first-line treatment for agitated behaviors. However, they can cause severe side effects. Doll therapy is an innovation, non-pharmaceutical, therapeutic intervention that can affect agitated behaviors, thus far a protocol for the therapy does not exist. A 30 day doll therapy intervention protocol was developed and implemented for 16 dementia residents in a nursing home. Pre and post chart reviews of each participants negative behaviors were measurement before and after the implementation of the doll therapy. After intervention, participants had a decrease in negative behavior episodes. Doll therapy is an innovative, non-pharmacological therapeutic alternative for improving the quality of life of patients with dementia.
