Epidemiology of Alzheimer?s dementia in Tashkent

Abstract:

Background: Alzheimer?s disease is considered to be one of the main problems in modern geriatrics. In Uzbekistan the incidences of Alzheimer?s dementia vary between 12.5 to 37 cases per 100 people elder than 65 years. The mortality rate from the Alzheimer?s disease in this age bracket goes up to 15-20% (Khojayeva N.I., 2013). Purpose: The objective is to study the structure and risk factors for AD among the Uzbek population. Materials & methods: The scientific basis for the evaluation of the epidemiological situation in the regions is the register approach. The study was conducted in Tashkent, with the population of over 3 million people. Results: The results have shown that between 2011 and 2012 there were 40,782 cases of AD, 52.6% of which were among male, and 47.4% - female. Within the structure of dementia, early stage occurs in 71.9% cases, while advanced stage in 28.1% cases. The mortality rate among men is higher - 53%, than among women. The highest mortality rate, up to 34.1 %, is registered among 60-69- year-old men, and over 70 ?year-old women - 62, 2%. According to the register, the major risk factors for AD were: heredity ? 26.5%, brain arteriosclerosis ? 20.8%, and the combination of heredity with atherosclerosis ? 42.9%. The causes of atherosclerosis were: smoking - 62%, diabetes mellitus ? 5.1%, the combination of smoking with diabetes ? 13.9%. Conclusions: The studies have concluded that the rate of AD among the Uzbek population is still high. Some further developments in this sphere are required to prevent this disease.

Liliya Muhametova has started her research for PhD at the age of 24 years from Tashkent Medical Academy and plans to make her postdoctoral studies from the same organization.
