midacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide with neurotoxic action. Only few data is available on its toxicity for aquatic species.
Imidacloprid considered as possible replacement for the widely used organophosphate pesticides. However, limited researchers
have made to study imidacloprid genotoxic effect in different fish tissues. The present investigation was aimed to assess the
evaluation of the genotoxicity of the insecticide to the fresh water teleost
using Comet assay. The fishes were
exposed to five concentrations (0.002, 0.004, 0.006, 0.008 and 0.01 ppm) for 96 h and sampling was done at regular (24, 48, 72 and
96 h) intervals for assessment of DNA damage in gill tissue. A noticeable rise in gill DNA break up has been observed in exposed
fishes. This study recommends the use of comet assay as a tool to screen genotoxicity in aquatic fauna on exposure to xenobiotics.
