The number of disordered eating cases in adolescent athletes and the female participation in sports that require body exposure
and emphasize agility, beauty and leanness of movements, such as dancing, gymnastics, long-distance running and also
tennis, have increased in recent years. Disordered eating can lead to serious health complications such as menstrual irregularities
and bone demineralization, featuring the Female Athlete Triad. Therefore, to identify vulnerable groups and the best way to
track them, it became extremely necessary to describe and confront recent data on the presence of disordered eating and its
complications, covering energy availability and Female Athlete Triad spectrum, in young female athletes and control subjects.
Most scrutinized literature was collected from different sources including PubMed. We will discuss data of more than 11,000
women from 68 singular sports of 11 diverse countries, tracked for disordered eating by many different methods such as validated
or not questionnaires, structured interviews by questionnaires or clinical visit from heterogeneous studies. Not all the researchers
investigated all the Female Athlete Triad conditions like menstrual irregularities according to American Society of Reproductive
Medicine and bone mineral density for chronologic age screened by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), but it seems that
athletes are in a more severe stage of the disorders. We will also discuss recent, still unpublished, data of the first research about
this topic on female adolescent tennis players in Brazil, comprising data on prevalence and severity stages. Such discussion can
be the first step for future prevention programs establishment, guidelines, and policies.
