Abstract
With the expansion of social media networks in recent years, there has been an increase in cases of sexual violence that involve people close to each other and those who meet each other via the Internet. We conducted an investigation of education for coping with and preventing sexual violence by using ICT. This survey was approved by the ethics committee of Saga University. From September 2015 to February 2016, we surveyed a total of 788 students aged 13 to 14 years at 10 junior high schools where the principals gave approval for this research. Skills related to preventing emotional and physical violence were assessed, as well as conflict resolution skills. Group education concerning dating violence was provided to all students. A total of 730 students consented to participate in this study (valid response rate, 92.6%) before and after receiving group education, and 671 consented to the follow-up survey (valid response rate, 85.2%). Students who completed internet learning after group education (intervention group, n=305) were compared with those who did not participate in internet learning (control group, n=366). Education showed an effect in girls with regard to physical violence prevention skills, discussion with other individuals, and attack avoidance, while it had an effect in boys with respect to physical violence prevention skills, otheroriented emotional reactivity (empathy/compassion), and attack avoidance. Our results suggest the importance of improving adolescent education about dating violence in order to prevent sexual violence by using ICT.
