Abstract
Children are more susceptible to ADRs and this susceptibility is compounded due to hospitalization. We all know that pediatrics can be termed as therapeutic orphans, because the medications used by them are altered doses of adult dosage forms and no proper clinical trials are done on them. Pediatric varies an adult from functional and physiological aspects such as blood flow, heart rate, water content, and metabolism. So there is a high chance of occurrence of harmful effects which is termed as Adverse Drug Reactions by WHO. In this study incidence of ADR assessment was done in the children admitted in the hospital and compared with the retrospective data. The data was collected and analyzed using chi-square test. Incidence of ADRs increased by 4%, when compared with the past data. Children?s receiving antibiotics showed an increase of 8.3% and GI side effects increased by 5.9% when compared with past data. Children?s in between 2-4 years has 5% increased risk when compared with past data. Children?s receiving multiple medications nearly 4-5 medications has an increased incidence of ADR?s when compared with past data. In conclusion, a peer monitoring of hospitalized children for Adverse Drug Reactions is necessary for detecting and managing the Adverse Drug Reactions so as to decrease the mortality and morbidity rates due to them.
