Chemistry has improved our quality of life, and made thousands of useful products and materials possible. But this achievement has come at a price for the global environment and non-renewable natural resources. Sustainability is at stake and continuation of the quality of life is under threat. Many chemicals work their way up the food chain and circulate round the globe. Green chemistry and its principle want to change all these negative impacts and through design, innovation and green processes to restore the planet?s sustainable development. Green chemistry also known as environmentally benign chemistry has already demonstrated how chemistry can protect human health and the environment in an economically beneficial manner. Working in these disciplines, chemists and engineers are creating the scientific and technological breakthroughs that will be crucial to the future success of the society and economy. Green Chemistry Network Centre (GCNC) established under IUPAC CHEMRAWN GCI-DEN Grant and recommendation of a panel of world leaders headed by Professor Paul Anastas (known as father of Green Chemistry) is working for the implementation of Green Chemistry. This presentation will discuss the opportunities for the next generation engineers, educationists and material designers to create a safer future. The presentation shall include real world case of Indian Industry, which will prove that industries have to adopt Green Chemistry because, it will not be only beneficial for the society and the environment, but also will make companies competitive and provide cost benefits for industries.
R K Sharma is presently Professor and Coordinator of Green Chemistry Network Centre established for Green Chemistry Networking in India. After obtaining his PhD in 1986, he has worked on JSPS Post Doctoral Fellowship at University of Tokyo and Kumamoto University. He is the recipient of several professional national and international recognitions and awards. He has published more than 150 research publications, books, book chapters and articles. At present, he is also incharge of International Chapter of The American Chemical Society-Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) and Honorary Secretary of Royal Society of Chemistry London (North India Section).
