Abstract
Initially hampered by poor results, intestinal transplantation alone or in combination with other abdominal organs (multivisceral transplantation) has evolved and currently stands as the definite treatment for patients with intestinal failure and life-threatening complications of total parenteral nutrition. There has been an increasing trend in patient and graft survival primarily due to improvement in patient selection, advances immunosuppression and improved perioperative management. This review summarizes the key elements in patient selection, types of grafts and updates in the short and long term management of multivisceral transplantation.
