Optical coherence tomography angiography findings in pseudoxanthoma elasticum with angioid streaks

Abstract :

Angioid streaks (AS) are the most common ocular manifestation in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE). The major cause of severe visual loss in patients with AS is choroidal neovascularization (CNV). We report the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in a patient with PXE and angioid streaks. A 17-year-old woman with PXE presented with visual disturbance in her left eye. Best corrected visual acuity was 10/10 OD and 10/10 OS. Funduscopic examination revealed angioid streaks on both eyes and especially an angioid streak that passed through the macula on her left eye. Multimodal imaging OCTA demonstrated no CNV on both eyes and no abnormalities of the vascular plexus. There was a disruption of the Bruch's membrane subfoveally without any signs of CNV on her left eye. OCTA combined with other multimodal imaging modalities may be a useful tool for diagnosing CNV secondary to angioid streaks in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum especially in younger patients due to its fast and non-invasive method.

Georgios Karastatiras has completed his Medical Degree at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Greece. He is currently pursuing his MSc in Management of National Health Care System Services. He is Navy Officer at Hellenic Navy. He had his Ophthalmology training at Athens Naval Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, UK, Sussex Eye Hospital, UK and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, UK. He is a Consultant Ophthalmology Surgeon at Athens Naval Hospital. He participates in the private practice of Eye Diagnosis Medical Center. He is a Fellow of EBO and a member at EPOS, Euretina, ESCRS, Royal College of Ophthalmology, GVRS, HSIORS and Hellenic Ophthalmological Society.
