Abstract :

Standardisation is extremely essential and mandatory for global acceptance. Datura ferox L. is an erect annual, herb belonging to the family Solanaceae. The seeds are useful in the treatment of delirium and mania. The seeds are small reniform or ?D? shaped, greyish black bilaterally compressed heavy undulated surface with testa reticulated and pitted. The outermost epidermis of testa possesses 1- layered lignified malphigian cells. A narrow zone of nucellus is present. The malphigian cells and nucellus are wider towards hilum. The seed endosperm has a single layered epidermis. The endosperm is precocious with polygonal cells containing starch and oil. The embryo is conspicuous with dense starchy and oily substances. The powder microscopic and organoleptic characters are provided. Physico-chemical parameters of raw drug viz., extractive values, ash values, formulation, besides wt. per ml., total solids, alcohol content along with HPTLC finger printing and UV studies have been undertaken for mother tincture for the first time.
