Prevention through Vaccination Cervix
• Lower part of the uterus
• Connects the body of the uterus to the vagina (birth canal) Burden of disease
• Globally, each year:
◊ 500,000 women are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer
◊ 270,000 women die due to Cervical
• In India, each year:
◊ 1,32,000 women are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer
◊ 74,000 women die due to Cervical Cancer
◊ It is even more common than breast cancer
◊ Cervical Cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer related death amongst women in India
• Cervical cancer is the No. 1 cause of Cancer related death amongst Indian women.
• Screening, until recently, was the only way to detect abnormalities and prevent Cervical Cancer
• Although effective, screening has its limitations (reliability, cost and compliance)
• Vaccination offers a new alternative in preventing an infection that may lead to Cervical Cancer
• Vaccination alongside screening could further reduce the burden of Cervical Cancer
