Abstract :

Underserved populations warrant increased primary care prevention. The current workforce utilization and care delivery system is resulting in higher need for providers than available. Although, as the demand for providers continues to increase the number of physicians graduating and entering the workforce continues to decline. Full utilization of nurse practitioner services need to be implemented along with the creation of innovative partnerships. These innovations are essential in developing a proficient future workforce that can care for complex underserved populations. The Manatt Report fosters new models for innovation in preparing the next primary care workforce. It supports partnerships between academic nursing and academic health centers in improving patient outcomes. The University of Colorado College of Nursing (CON)-Denver embraced a new vision of academic partnership as it sought educational experiences with underserved populations for its students. The Leadership of Childrens Hospital (CH) and CON met to discuss mutual needs. CH Family Clinic was challenged by the increased and complex needs of its underserved neighborhood. The College was challenged in seeking relevant clinical sites for students to practice with underserved populations. A position was created by the CON to practice in Childrens Hospital Family Clinic. The clinician was onboarded and oriented to the interdisciplinary team and assisted in developing a panel of patients. Once the clinician was comfortable with the role, her preceptor role was introduced. A student rotation was planned. The goal was to increase retention of the position, allow for student skill development, and improve the outcomes of the underserved population.
