Abstract:

Nitrous oxide is an environmental pollutant, owing to its potential involvement in stratospheric destruction of the ozone layer by being a strong greenhouse gas. According to Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, N 2 O stands as the second non-CO 2 greenhouse gas having a global worming potential of 310 equivalents to CO 2 . The continuous increase in its concentration in the atmosphere, both due to natural and anthropogenic sources (0.2?0.3% per year) and longer atmospheric residence time (150 years) enforce us to develop efficient catalysts for its decomposition into nitrogen and oxygen to protect our global environment. Therefore, there is a need for further studies on the development of the catalysts from the following two points of view: (i) to find new active catalyst and (ii) to improve its activity and stability towards the inhibitory gases. In this investigation, direct decomposition of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) on pure and alkali-doped Co 3 O 4 /MCM-41 nano-composite catalysts was examined. It was found that the activity of the Co 3 O 4 /MCM-41 catalyst strongly depended on the amount of Co 3 O 4 loading. The influence of alkali cation promoters (Li, Na, K, and Cs) on the activity of the most active catalyst in the Co 3 O 4 / MCM-41 series, i.e. with Co 3 O 4 loading of 30 wt. %, was also investigated. The sequence of the promotional effect was found to be: un-promoted < Li < Cs < Na < K-promoted catalyst. The reason for the increase in activity for the added alkali cations was electronic in nature
