Abstract :

Dog blood component preparation, storage and their applications on critical cases have gained good momentum during the recent years in India. During 2012-14, about 412 haemodynamically unstable dogs were presented at the Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, Chennai with disorders like thrombocytopenia and anemia in haemoprotozoans, anemia in chronic renal insufficiency, haemorrhage and bleeding tendencies like epistaxis, echymosis and purpura. In the Emergency and Critical Care Unit, whole blood transfusion was carried out in 312 pancytopenic dogs with haemprotozoan diseases; Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) was administered to 30 dogs with profuse epistaxis; three dogs with rodenticide toxicity; two dogs with snake bite toxicity; thirteen cases of parvo viral enteritis and 28 cases of liver diseases. Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC) was transfused into 18 dogs with chronic renal insufficiency and four dogs with pyometritis. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) was transfused to 45 thrombocytopenic dogs with bleeding tendencies. The preparation, storage and therapy of canine blood components FFP, PRBC, PRP for the first time in India were reviewed.

G R Baranidharan is an Assistant Professor at Madras veterinary college, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, India. He is also blood bank officer at TANUVAS animal blood bank and senior veterinarian at The Ark veterinary clinic. He is specialized in small animal transfusion medicine.
