Abstract
Adherence medication and to low salt diet are an important aspect of self-care behaviors that plays role in improving quality of life and reduce readmission rates, mortality and health cost. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between type D personality and adherence to medication and the low salt diet in patients with systolic heart failure. This was a descriptive -correlational study that 100 patients with heart failure at least one year experience of developing heart failure and ejection fraction below 40% admitted to hospital Alborz Social Security of Karaj and the Social Security Hospital of Shahriar in 2013 using convenience sampling were entered into the study. Demographic data and type-D personality questionnaire, medication adherence scale and low sodium eating behavior scale, was completed by interview. Data was analyzed by SPSS software version 18 and using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and coefficient Pearson correlation.75% of heart failure patients had type D personality. The 60% was moderate low adherence to a low salt diet and 65% was the poor medical adherence. There was a significant negative moderate correlation between type D personality and medical adherence (p<0.001). Significant positive poor correlation was found between adherence to the low salt diet and depression/anxiety (p=0.032), social inhibition (p=0.008) and total score of type D personality (p=0.023). Heart failure patients with type D personality had low adherence to medication and low salt diet. Screening and evaluation of patients with heart related to type D personality and referring patients for consultation and use of appropriate therapies can help to enhance adherence to medication and low salt diet and quality of life of heart failure patients.
