Abstract:

An audit has been carried out at Salisbury District Hospital (SDH), to assess the proportion of children undergoing a repeat general anaesthetic for dental extractions. Dental decay is the number one reason that children aged five to nine are admitted to hospital in England. General anaesthetic carries risks in itself and it is preferable to avoid repeating. The ??snatch list? is an oral surgery day case list that usually runs once a week in the day surgery unit at SDH. The lists comprises of children, many under the age of ten, who require dental extractions under GA. It has been noted that some children are returning for further extractions under GA. The aim of this audit is to collect data on the cases seen in the ??snatch list? including referral details, treatment details and previous GAs. This may provide evidence on the benefit of extracting all teeth of poor prognosis at the first GA. Ultimately the aim is to avoid future repeat general anaesthetics in children requiring dental extractions, and a leaflet has been constructed alongside this project, to educate these patients and parents on how to avoid further dental extractions under GA. 265 cases were seen on the ??snatch list? between February 2015 and February 2016. Data has been collected on the 265 cases so far. Out of these, 6.8% underwent a repeat GA for dental extractions. 44.4% of repeat GAs involved extraction of the contralateral or opposing tooth of one previously extracted. Caries was the most common reason for extraction. This presentation will discuss the data findings so far. Once the full data collection is complete, it would be useful to compare the findings with local and national statistics, and implement further preventive measures in our department to help avoid repeat GAs in the future.
