Abstract
Objective: We examined the level of risk perception in non-diabetic people with a family history of diabetes in their first degree relatives. Method: We conducted a cross sectional study in health care facilities with diabetes prevention and treatment units in north health network of Tehran, the capital of Iran. The inclusion criteria were diabetes free adults who were ≥20 years, had a family history of diabetes in at least one first degree family member and not being pregnant for women. This study concluded 408 participants. Results: Of all participants, 79% were female. 93.4% believed that diabetes is a serious disease, 40.5% thought they were very much and much at risk for diabetes disease because of having a diabetic family member and 19.9% though the probability of getting diabetes in the next five years was very much and much. After sex adjustment the difference between fasting blood glucose testers and nontesters was not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Less than half of participants considered themselves at risk of disease because of family history of diabetes.
