Abstract:

The indicator based Adverse Event (AE) detection method were implemented around the world and reported as an effective method. Such system was introduced in the present study setting to assess its effectiveness. There is a need to study the perception of the stakeholders on this newly implemented system. The present study was aimed to study the perception of surgeons on the indicator based AE detection system. A questionnaire was developed covering the issues like AE as a problem in their practice, need to monitor AE, usefulness of the developed indicators, need of a hospital based indicator system and need for electronic patient record for AE detection. At the end of the review period, the results were presented to the surgery department and their feedback was sought. Surgeons were of the opinion that AEs are a problem in their practice (90%), there is a need to monitor and prevent AEs (60%), the present system is useful in monitoring AEs (60%), need of a hospital based indicator system (80%) and need for electronic patient record to monitor and prevent AEs (70%). As this system was implemented for the first time in the study setting, surgeons? feedback was considered to indicate the effectiveness of this program. Most of the surgeons opined that this system has the potential to identify AEs and it would be better if it is used along with the electronic patient records.

Gopika Krishnan is pursuing Doctor of Pharmacy in Manipal University. Apart from Academic curriculum we are trained to do ward duties in 2400 bedded hospital which is attached to our college. We are providing clinical activities like patient counseling, provide drug information, Adverse Drug Reaction monitoring and reporting, medication history interview etc.
