Abstract:

Dental caries affect 39 billion people worldwide. Dental caries is a multifactorial disease but we do need focusing on dietary sugars as prominent causes. Sheiham A., 2015 state that low sugars intake demonstrate sensitivity of cariogenesis to even a low sugar intakes. Processed starches have cariogenesis potential when accompanying sucrose and cariogenic oral bacteria to flourish and to generate enamel demineralization acid. The importance of sugar as caused of caries is important especially in preventive strategy. WHO has release new guideline for sugar intake for adult and children and recommends reducing intake of free sugars throughout life course less than 10% total energy and further less than 5% of total energy intake. This study asses the frequency of sugary snack and beverage consumption of adolescent in junior high school with dental caries incidence by using food frequency questioner. The period of adolescence is susceptible to caries, because calcification of tooth enamel remains imperfect, there is an increase in total tooth surface and environmental factors such as diet, independence to seek care or avoid it, still low awareness to maintain oral hygiene, and additional social factors may also contribute to caries.
