The impact of qualitative research on the development of nursing

Abstract :

Introduction: Chronic rheumatic diseases largely affect the health-related quality of life. The goal of treatment is not just relieving the symptoms and prevent disease-related complications, but also improving the quality of life. Chronic rheumatic diseases are reflected by a very different clinical signs, which is different from patient to patient. Because of this, it is important to know individual, integrated and holistic approach to the patient. The purpose of this study was to determine whether chronic rheumatic disease impact the quality of patients' life. Methodology: The study was based on a quantitative methodology. In the study, 128 patients with chronic rheumatic disease were involved. As a research instrument Promis HAQ with which we acquired self-assessment of the ability, pain and quality of patients' life was used. Cronbach alpha was 0.950. For processing data, we used a computer program SPSS 20.0. We used descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis with which we determined the impact of the independent variable on the studied dependent variable. Results: We found that the overall mobility of surveyed patients with rheumatic disease is poor. 61% surveyed patients was older than 65 years. On average, more than 30% of patients in carrying out daily activities have more problems. Patients have the most difficulty in performing household tasks (2.11±0.712), eating (2.42±0.672), exercise (2.01±0.685) and personal hygiene (2.19±0.701). We found that the quality of patients' life is statistically significantly (r=0.812, p<0.001) associated with years of rheumatic disease. We also find that the pain has statistically significant effect (_= 7.896, p<0.001) on the quality of life of patients with rheumatic disease. Discussion and conclusion: The pain and duration of chronic disease, limited patients with rheumatic disease in carrying out daily activities and effect on their quality of life. For this reason, in addition to early detection of rheumatic diseases and pain management, nurses? functioning with health education at all levels of health care is also very important.

Mateja Lorber was educated at a secondary nursing school in Maribor, continued her studies at the College of Healthcare Workers in Ljubljana, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, and graduated on postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Management. Since 2005, she has been employed at the University of Maribor Faculty of Health Sciences as a Lecturer for subjects: nursing care, managing chronic disease, research in nursing and internal medicine nursing, and she is a mentor for graduate works. She also had given lectures at foreign universities. Actively participates in many international and domestic conferences and congresses in nursing and management. She is also a reviewer for two journals and books of proceeding. The results of her scientific and research works are published in domestic and foreign journals.
