Abstract
Assessment of the remaining life of high temperature service exposed components is necessary for effective utilization of these expensive items beyond the design life. Knowledge of residual life also allows time for replacement of the components and avoids accident of such type of components used at high temperature. Although the steels are heat treated to provide a stable microstructure it was reported in earlier investigations that some microstructural changes due to prolong service exposure of 450-550?C leading to deterioration in mechanical properties. The degradation in mechanical properties of these steels during service has, therefore, naturally been attributed to changes in size and shape of all the existing carbides and to the formation of new carbides, whether at the expenses of less stable carbides or from solid solution. There has been considerable interest in recent years in the power generating industry, petrochemical industry and fertilizer industry to estimate the remaining life of high temperature service exposed components for effective utilization of these expensive items. A knowledge of residual life also allows time for replacement of the components amongst the various methods used to predict the remaining service life of a component, metallographic technique is an important one since this method can be considered as non-destructive, very small sample is needed and this method can directly measures the damage micro mechanism. The present paper reviews the microstructural changes of ferritic steels due to long term service exposure and describes the remaining life of service exposed components used in thermal power plant.
