This paper proposes an adaptive optimal gain scheduling approach to the Load Frequency Control (LFC) problem. Due to the simplicity of the integral controller and its widespread use in the power industry, it is used in this scheme; however, genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the integral gain for a number of operating conditions of the power system. The obtained gains are used to train an Adaptive Network–based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to provide a general mapping between the operating conditions and the optimal control gains. Both approaches (GA and ANFIS) are compared to the conventional integral control for a two-area power system. The comparison reveals that the proposed scheme can be an attractive alternative from both performance and design points of view.
