Abstract Obesity is recognized as a cause of many metabolic and cardiovascular disorders through its ability to promote chronic systemic inflammation. Recent studies have found that adipose tissues secrete numerous cytokines that are referred to as adipokines. Although most adipokines induce inflammation, adiponectin inhibits inflammatory reactions and protects against metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. This review focuses on the anti-inflammatory properties of adiponectin in various experimental systems, especially with respect to cardiovascular diseases.
