Riparian zones are the important transitional regions for exchange of substance, energy, and information between river ecological system and land ecological system, and have obvious marginal effect. The current research of riparian zones mainly concentrates on their definition, functions, management, and width determination and measures for their protection. The ecological environment of riparian zones is always influenced by the time-spatial factor, hydrological factor, meteorological factor, and some other complicated factors, but with the ordinary method, it's impossible to perform a deep research. Therefore, it is suggested that, with the theoretical basis of modern mathematics, ecology, and hydraulics, the modern computer technology and GIS technology should be adopted for realization of the comprehensive planning, optimal design, and monitoring and management of ecological riparian zones.
