Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials to improve clinical outcomes by reducing the emergence of resistance, limiting drug-related adverse events, and minimizing the risk of unintentional consequences associated with antimicrobial use such as the risk of infection with Clostridium difficile.
