Abstract Share this page

Restrictions to fishing areas has been used by several countries in different ecosystems as a measure of controlling that activity. In the State of Amazonas the IBAMA delimited some areas where fishery was suspended during the spawning period. The purpose of the present paper is to ascertain whether there are perceptible results of the fishery on account of that restriction. Data collected by the UFAM Fishery Statistics project from four protected and unprotected areas respectively, were analysed, regarding fish landings occurring on the Harbour of Manaus - AM between 1994 and 2001. These data had been compared in total capture and CPUE with the use of ANCOVA and ANOVA. A total of 2753 trips were registered as proceeding from these areas, 1529 for protected areas and 1224 for the areas not protected. After the prohibition, the registers of trips of fishery during the period of the fenced season, for such areas, had passed of 24% for 21%. The disembarked fished ratio showed small variation, presenting increase in the landing of jaraqui and reduction of matrinchã for the two areas. The ANCOVA indicated not to have significant difference between the groups of areas, and that they would be varying in function of the exerted effort. However, increase of the CPUE after the protection was significant and could be representing indications of reply of the supplies to such measures. This increase was similar for sedentary and migratory species that had not presented significant variations in the differences between themselves (p>0,05). However, registers of landings during the reproductive period had persisted, indicating imperfections in the execution of the prohibitions. Therefore, for an efficient protection of species by restriction of areas, it is necessary that this measure has been linked to an ampler planning of the basin and that has participation of all involved in the process, for the its effective application.
