Much work has been dune on the fatigue characteristics of concrete and strongly cemented materials. (Pretorius, 1970; Otte, 1972). Most of the authors realised that cementitious layers in the road structures should be designed so that it is not overstrained at the bottom; using the induced tensile strain at the bottom of the layer as distress criterion, rather than tensile stress.
