Abstract Sulfated carbohydrates mediate diverse extracellular recognition events in both normal and pathological processes. The sulfotransferases that generate specific carbohydrate 'sulfoforms' have recently been recognized as key modulators of these processes and therefore represent potential therapeutic targets.
