An ecological clas sif ication syste m has been developed for the Pacific Southwest Region of the For est Ser vice. As par t of this classification ef fort, coast r edwood ( Sequoia semper - virens ) for ests o f souther n M onter ey County in the Los Padr es Nationa l For est wer e clas si­ fied int o six ecolo gical ty pes using vegetati on, soils an d geo morphology taken fr om 115, 0. 1- acr e plots. Four types occur between 100 an d 80 0 ft el evation. The coast r edwood/br acken fern-chain f ern//st reamsides ecological type occupies the nar row flood plains, str eam banks and scatter ed alluvial ter races of lar ge per ennial strea ms. Upslope of this type is the coas t redwood/swor dfer n-wester n wake robin//Gam boa- Sur ecological type, which cover s ge ntle slopes near ephem er al or per ennial str ea ms but is best developed on ste ep colluvial sl opes . Occasional stands of the coast redwood//Ga mboa -Sur e cological ty pe a re encountered on al­ luvial- colluvial fa ns, old str eam terr aces and lower slo pe benche s.
