Abstract Osteomyelitis in the digit of the diabetic patient is best managed by antibiotics and amputation. Antibiotics alone are not effective or cost-effective as demonstrated in a retrospective study of 22 such patients diagnosed clinically and confirmed roentgenographically. Definitive operation allows the patient to return to work within two weeks of amputation.
