Abstract This article reports the progress made in the last several years of investigations into possible pathogenic processes that lead to the development of interstitial cystitis. The evidence presented here asserts that bladder mucin is functionally intact in interstitial cystitis and that the permeability of the afflicted patient's bladder is not greater than normal.
