ix ABSTRACT Today, it is widely believed that the ultimate guarantor of social peace isrobust democratic institutions such as elections which create the basis for democraticgovernance by ensuring that leaders have credible and accepted mandates to govern.On the other hand political violence over elections has been the phenomenon occurrence in Nigeria‘s democratic environment and to an extent the causes of suchviolence are been accredited to electoral frauds and manipulations. But theoccurrence of the 2011 post-election violence after an election which is regarded asrelatively free and fair signaled another dimension in the analysis of post-electionviolence in the country.
