AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pH and calcium ion release of Grey MTA, White MTA and a new material - Biodentine used for root-end filling. METHODOLOGY: Each material was placed in a plastic tube (n=5) and immersed in a glass flask containing deionized water. The samples were tested for determining pH and released calcium ions using pH meter and atom ic absorption spectrophotometry methods, respectively. RESULTS: All the analyzed materials showed alkaline pH and capacity to release calcium ions; however, a tende ncy of reduction of these characteristics was noted for all the analyzed materials. The highest values f or both pH and calcium release were observed in Grey MTA. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that all materials investigated presented alkaline pH and ability of release of calcium ions. In non esthetic areas, Grey MTA can be preferred because of its high pH and calcium re lease.
