Abstract The presence of biofilm or denture plaque on the tissue contacting the (intaglio) surface of a denture is a major etiologic factor in the pathogenesis of both denture stomatitis and inflammatory papillary hyperplasia. This article reviews the literature concerning the various factors that contribute to the development of denture plaque and its colonization by Candida albicans and other microorganisms.
